• Week Five Summary

This week was pretty crazy. In my other class, I had multiple exams and papers due so this week was stressful. Going into the week, I was nervous about the audio because I do not like to hear myself speak. However, the assignments I did were fun and not too hard. At first I had trouble downloading LAME but thanks to Professor Bond I got it to work. I listened to the radio show on Tuesday and really liked hearing all of the layering and sound effects they used. Live Tweeting Anansi Boys I then worked on my radio bumper. I had a hard time thinking of what to say…

  • Brainstorm for Radio Show

For the radio show, I think it would be a great idea to incorporate a live tweet on listening to a myth, legend, or tale. Since many of these stories were told from generation to generation by word of mouth, I think that would be a good way to listen to some of the stories. I think we could discuss topics on twitter about the story we hear. I am not sure how but it would be interesting to incorporate some of the classes different characters into the show. We could also explore different music that may sound like the theme or have been incorporated into stories. Overall, I think…

  • Hello this is Kate…

To incorporate my character into an assignment this week, I chose to have a phone conversation (5 stars). I decided to have an animal call Kate (my character) for help. I wrote the script and then recorded myself speaking it. I then started to play with the effects and it started to sound the chipmunks. I decided to have a chipmunk call. I went through and added the chipmunk voice and added the phone ringing and hanging up from freesound. I liked being able to incorporate my character into this assignment. This was one of my first times using Audacity, so it took me awhile to learn, but I think I…

  • Commuter Sounds

When I saw this (3.5 stars), I thought it would be good to tell the story of commuting to classes. I am a commuter student, so this is my routine of driving to campus everyday. I used freesound to find all of the sounds and was amazed with all of the options. I started by finding the most realistic sounds. I found the sound of a house door locking and then added the sound of keys dangling. I then used a car door opening and shutting to represent me or someone getting into a car. I found a car starting and then added a radio station to that. I always listen…

  • Techno Beethoven

For this assignment (4.5 stars), I wanted to find some music and make it sound totally different. I started by searching for music on free sound and found this Beethoven remix. I decided to use this because I knew it was a very recognizable sound that would be a good song to try and make sound different. I dowloaded it and then used Audacity to edit it. I added the “wah-wah” effect and then added more tempo. I also adjusted the base and treble.   I think it is pretty hard to recognize that it is Beethoven. It definitely has a very techno, electronic sound which is interesting to hear when…

  • Daily Creates for the Week

I really think that daily creates are one of my favorite things to do each week. I like how quick and unique the ideas are. For the first tweet, I thought about different people and realized that one of the ultimate power couples would be a great option. George and Amal Clooney are both attractive and seem very smart. Amal and George Clooney! She is a human rights lawyer, and they both seem super compassionate and smart. #ds106 #tdc2451 pic.twitter.com/VscbA4aS4N — eahumw (@EmilyHutchins8) September 28, 2018 For this daily create, I googled what movies were released and what happened in 1997 (the year I was born). I found that the…

  • You’re Listening to DS106 Radio

This was my first assignment using Audacity, so I was a little worried about using it. I used freesound.org to download the radio tuning and background music. I added the tuning/static to add a sound effect and to make the bumper have something different than just my voice. I then looked through the music and found some jazz that was more upbeat and would be a good contrast to the static sound. I then edited them and my voice to fit together in audacity. This was a really good beginning project for me to try and I really liked getting to listen to all of the free sounds we can…

  • Live Tweeting Anansi Boys

Going into this, I had no idea what to expect. I had never participated in a live-tweeting session or listened to a story like this. It was an cool story with so much production! The scenes were able to be differentiated through the use of the music changing. They also used sound effects which helped lead to the setting. My favorite sound effects were definitely the jungle sounds and the beach waves with the birds. They helped me to stay focused, change the setting, and imagine the scene. I thought it was hard to focus sometimes and also differentiate between the different characters. They also used an incredible amount of…

  • “Moon Graffiti”

This was a very interesting story to listen to. It sounds extremely realistic and makes you feel like you are in space. The way the scene is described it makes you not need visual aid because you can imagine it.  Through the tone of their voices, you can tell the mood and the sadness or other emotions present. For example, when they are talking about their families and leaving messages that really conveys the sadness and human nature. The audio above sounds like actual audio from the moon landing. The crash and then the moment of silence after make you think about the what ifs of it that actually happened.…

  • Week Four Summary

I felt this week was much more stressful. I started the assignments early in the week, but still felt like there was so much to do! My favorite assignment this week was the photoblitz because I got to look for the items I needed to photograph, and then I tried to take them in a creative manner. I chose to watch “Once upon a Time” and I enjoyed analyzing it and figuring out which techniques they used to emphasize the scenes. For my character assignment, I found and took pictures of what my character would keep in her bag. I tried to be as creative as possible with this and…
